About the Violin

Violins are available in five popular sizes to allow students from four years of age and up through adults to be fitted propererly. Violins are used in orchestras, chamber groups, and bands, to play classical pop, show tunes, country, bluegrass, new wave, rock, jazz. etc. Violins are available in acoustic and in electric models. Accoustic violins can be amplified with the use of a pickup.

Violins can be rented, or purchased. Reliable student violins can start from one hundred and seventy five dollars and up. The lower cost violins would need to be carefully selected by a knowledgeable person. The more expensive violins have been shop adjusted in a more careful way. Buying a violin for a five year old is questionable due to the higher risk to loose interest or not be ready for lessons on the violin. The piano or keyboad is a better choice for this age student. The disadvantage of the violin is that the strings have tension on them and you need the strength and coordination to press them down. Another factor is that the strings dig into the fingers and make them sore at first. This problem is hard to explain to a younge student. This problem will go away after about seven to ten days. If the student will play at least two days a week the problem with sore fingers will not be a problem again.

About the Viola

Violas like the violin are a four string instrument but are a little bigger and the instrument is in a lower pitch range. The lowest or thickest string on the viola is tuned to a C note and the other three viola strings are tuned to the same pitches as the three lowest violin strings. The Violin music is written in the G or treble cleff and the viola music is written in the lower C cleff. Most of the instruments that are used in grade and high school play in the G or treble cleff. This instrument comes in four popular sizes to allow students from around five years of age and up through adults to be fitted propererly. Violas are used in orchestras, chamber groups, and bands, to play classical pop, show tunes, country, bluegrass, new wave, rock, jazz. etc. Violas are available in acoustic and in electric models. Greg Madison Music Studio is a place where continual teaching improvement, expert music instruction and quality customer service are the highest priorities. I provide the very best instruction available through innovative teaching methods, fun learning concepts and an ongoing expansion of services, including student teacher jams and ensemble classes. I provide musical experiences that are versatile, fun and repeatedly elevate my students' passion and desire for playing music.

Group jam/theory sessions with 4 to 9 students are available in different styles of music with other students of same abilities two times a year. The instruments in these sessions will depend on the student ability and availability These sessions are for people who have played with with me and demonstrated that they have the knowledge, ability, dexterity, and can play in time. Another prerequisite is that they have had the basic writing of music notation with us prior to the start of these jam/theory classes. The first level type class works with written music or riff type play in different styles. The more advanced classes are improvisation classes in blues, rock, jazz etc.

Our FAQ page will hopefully answer many of the questions you may have.
